Concrete is the backbone of construction, playing a vital role in everything from houses to bridges. But what exactly makes concrete so strong and reliable? The answer lies in its mixture, which is a carefully balanced recipe of cement, sand, aggregate, and water. Getting this mixture right is not just about following a standard, but ensuring that your structure can withstand the test of time, especially in a region like Bali where earthquakes are a real concern.

The Magic of the Mix

  • Cement: This is the binder that holds the entire mix together. It’s made by crushing fired limestone into powder. When cement is mixed with water, a chemical reaction called hydration occurs. This process forms interlocking crystals which give concrete its strength.
  • Sand and Aggregate: Sand and gravel (aggregate) provide bulk to the mixture. The aggregate is made of broken pieces of stone. The right ratio of cement to sand and aggregate is essential. A commonly recognized mixture is 3 parts aggregate, 2 parts sand, and 1 part cement.
  • Water: Water is essential for the hydration process, but the amount is critical. Too much water weakens the concrete significantly.

Why the Right Mix Matters

In the competitive construction landscape, especially in places like Bali, builders may try to cut costs by reducing the amount of cement. This can have disastrous consequences as seen in the 2006 Yogya earthquake, where many houses collapsed due to weak mortar. Some mortar had as little as 1 part cement to 10 parts of sand, while a more effective mix should be 1 part cement to 2 or 3 parts of sand.

How to Achieve Stronger Concrete

The key to strong concrete is in the precise measurement of ingredients. Here’s what you need to do:

  • Use a Cement Mixer: Insist on using a cement mixer instead of hand-mixing to ensure that all ingredients are thoroughly combined.
  • Measure with Buckets: Use buckets to measure the quantities of aggregate, sand, cement, and water into the mixer. This helps maintain an accurate mix.
  • Don’t Overwater: Avoid adding extra water once the initial mix is prepared. Over-watering can weaken the concrete.
  • Mix Dry First: Mix the dry ingredients well before adding water.
  • Avoid Contamination: Make sure that saline water or unwashed sea sand, which contains salt, are not used to mix the concrete as these can degrade it.

Testing for Strength

The slump test and the compression test are two common methods for checking the quality of concrete:

  • Slump Test: A cone of wet concrete is cast, and then the mold is removed. The amount the concrete ‘slumps’ or drops, indicates how much water is in it. Too wet or too dry and the batch is rejected.
  • Compression Test: Cylindrical blocks of concrete are cast when the concrete is poured. These blocks are left for 24 hours and then compressed to test its strength. By testing the strength after 24 hours, the final strength can be predicted.

The Difference a Good Mix Makes

It’s worth noting that small changes in the mixture can make a big difference in strength. For example, by increasing the amount of cement by 28% and reducing the water by 22%, the strength of concrete can increase by as much as two and a half times. The amount of water is relatively small, which is easy to miss.

Using correct ratios of cement, sand, aggregate, and water, and not overwatering the mix, you can build structures in Bali that are not just visually appealing, but also incredibly strong and resilient.
